With the recent legalization of the recreational use of marijuana in Minnesota, there has been a trap set by the government many conservative podcasters and bloggers believe in that any users that buy legal marijuana from a dispensary using their ID will not be able to own firearms or ammunition and become part of the U.S. Federal registry of marijuana users.

The ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) field office in Saint Paul, Minnesota issued a news statement shortly after their Governer Tim Waltz signed and passed a new bill legalizing the use of marijuana. The statement clarified that states under the federal law, which current users of marijuana are now prohibited from possessing, receiving, transporting or shipping guns or ammo.

A summary of the statement explained that until marijuana is legalized by the federal government, gun owners should be aware that the law remains federally illegal to mix pot with guns and ammo said Jeff Reed (ATF special agent). "As regulators of the firearms industry and enforcers of firearm laws, we felt it was important to remind Minnesotans of this distinction as the marijuana laws adjust here in the State of Minnesota.”

The agency statement concluded that individuals looking to purchase guns and ammo must attest if they are users of marijuana on their ATF gun purchase applications. The agency stated that there is going to be no exeception for those us who use marijuana for recreational or medical purposes.
